My Child Has Been Bullied

MY CHILD HAS BEEN BULLIED

If your child has been bullied, it can leave you feeling angry, worried and unsure what to do next. You may want them to become more confident, more resilient and better able to handle difficult situations without becoming aggressive or fearful.

At Praetorian MMA, we work with children and teenagers from Fareham, Gosport and the surrounding areas who need confidence, structure and a positive place to belong. Martial arts will not magically solve bullying overnight, but the right training environment can help a young person rebuild confidence, improve body language, develop self-belief and learn how to stay calm under pressure.

If your child is in immediate danger, being threatened, physically hurt or targeted online, this should always be raised with the school, relevant safeguarding contacts or the appropriate authorities. Martial arts should support a child’s confidence and resilience, not replace proper action when bullying is serious.

BULLYING CAN CHANGE HOW A CHILD SEES THEMSELVES

Bullying can affect more than a child’s mood. It can change how they walk into a room, how they speak, how willing they are to try new things and how safe they feel around other people.

Some children become quiet. Some become angry. Some avoid school, clubs or social situations. Others pretend they are fine because they do not want to worry their parents.

The goal is not to turn a bullied child into someone who wants to fight. The goal is to help them become someone who feels stronger, calmer, more capable and less defined by what has happened to them.

MARTIAL ARTS SHOULD NOT TEACH CHILDREN TO BECOME BULLIES

A good martial arts club should never teach children to become aggressive, arrogant or eager to hurt others. That is not confidence. That is insecurity with better technique.

The right coaching teaches control. Children learn how to listen, follow instructions, respect training partners and manage themselves around others. They also learn that strength comes with responsibility.

This is especially important for children who have been bullied. They may arrive feeling nervous, defensive or emotionally bruised. They need structure, patience and encouragement, not pressure to become hard or aggressive.

CONFIDENCE STARTS WITH SMALL WINS

Confidence is not built by giving a child a speech. It is built through repeated small wins.

They learn a movement. They remember a technique. They partner with someone new. They finish a class they were nervous about starting. They realise they can do something difficult. Over time, those small wins begin to change how they see themselves.

That is one of the main benefits of structured training. It gives children a place where effort creates progress, and progress creates confidence.

WHY BJJ CAN HELP BULLIED CHILDREN

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be especially useful for children who lack confidence because it teaches control without relying on punching or kicking.

In BJJ, children learn how to move, escape, defend positions, stay calm and use technique instead of panic. They learn that size and strength matter, but they are not the only things that matter.

For a child who has felt powerless, that can be a powerful lesson. They begin to understand that they are not helpless. They can learn. They can improve. They can become more capable.

WHY MMA CAN HELP BUILD RESILIENCE

MMA training for children and teenagers should be structured, age-appropriate and carefully coached. It should not be about children hurting each other. It should be about movement, coordination, discipline, confidence and controlled skill development.

At Praetorian MMA, youth MMA includes striking, grappling, wrestling and movement skills in a controlled environment. This helps young people develop awareness, balance, fitness and confidence while learning how to train safely with others.

For children who have been bullied, this can help them feel less anxious in physical situations. They become more familiar with movement, contact and pressure, which can reduce fear and improve self-belief.

BODY LANGUAGE MATTERS

Bullying is not the victim’s fault. A child should never be blamed for being targeted.

However, confidence can change how a child carries themselves. Training can improve posture, eye contact, movement and general self-assurance. Over time, a child may begin to look and feel less vulnerable.

That does not mean they are responsible for stopping bullying on their own. It means they are developing tools that can help them move through the world with more confidence.

WE TEACH CONTROL, NOT REVENGE

One of the most important messages we give young people is that martial arts are not for revenge. Training is not about going back to school and proving a point.

Children need to understand that learning combat sports comes with responsibility. The aim is to avoid trouble where possible, ask for help when needed and only use physical skills when there is no safe alternative.

This is why coaching environment matters. Children need coaches who set standards, correct behaviour and teach discipline alongside technique.

A POSITIVE TEAM CAN REBUILD BELONGING

Bullying can make a child feel isolated. They may feel like they do not fit in, or that other people are always judging them.

A good club can give them a different experience. They train with other children, follow the same structure, work towards shared goals and become part of a team.

That sense of belonging matters. When a child feels accepted in one positive environment, it can help them carry more confidence into other parts of life.

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS LOOK FOR?

If your child has been bullied and you are considering martial arts, look for a club that prioritises safety, structure and coaching standards.

  • A beginner-friendly environment
  • Clear rules and behaviour standards
  • Coaches who understand children and teenagers
  • Controlled training, not chaos
  • A focus on confidence, discipline and respect
  • Age-appropriate classes
  • A pathway that helps new students settle in

WHEN SHOULD A CHILD START?

A child does not need to feel brave before starting. Often, training is what helps them become brave.

Some children walk in confidently on day one. Others are nervous, quiet or unsure. That is normal. A good first step is simply visiting the club, meeting the team and trying a session in a supportive environment.

The aim is not to force them. The aim is to help them take a manageable first step.

WHERE TO START AT PRAETORIAN MMA

If your child has been bullied and you want to help them build confidence, discipline and resilience, the best starting point is choosing the pathway that fits their age and needs.

Being bullied can damage a child’s confidence, but it does not have to define them. With the right support, the right environment and consistent training, children can rebuild confidence, learn resilience and begin to see themselves as stronger than what happened to them.
