YOUTH BJJ GI

WHAT IS KIDS & TEENS BJJ GI?

Kids & Teens BJJ Gi is the traditional form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, taught using the Gi jacket and belt system. Young athletes learn how to use grips, control, leverage and technique to overcome larger or stronger opponents while developing confidence, discipline and problem-solving skills on the mats.

Students learn takedowns, guard work, positional control, escapes, submissions and movement patterns through structured coaching and supervised sparring. The Gi introduces additional technical layers through grips and control, helping students build a strong understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals.

At Praetorian MMA, BJJ Gi works alongside our Kids & Teens NoGi BJJ classes, MMA programme, competitions and 1-to-1 coaching opportunities. Many students train across multiple classes each week, accelerating their development while progressing through the BJJ belt system.

COMPETING IN BJJ

COMPETITION IS OPTIONAL

Not every child needs to compete. Many students train NoGi BJJ for confidence, discipline, fitness and enjoyment, and that is completely fine.

For students who do want to test themselves, competition can be a brilliant way to build confidence under pressure, set goals and experience the reward of hard work.

Coaches will guide students through preparation, suitable events and what to expect on the day. If you are looking to register for BJJ competitions, our Smoothcomp guide explains the process.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Yes. BJJ Gi is taught in a structured and supervised way. Students learn how to move, grip, control positions, escape safely and understand when to stop. The aim is not rough play, it is technical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with clear coaching standards.

Yes, but in a controlled and age-appropriate way. Sparring helps students test what they are learning, solve problems under pressure and build confidence. Coaches manage the intensity, pair students appropriately and make sure rounds are productive.

Yes. Parents are welcome to watch, especially when a child is new or nervous. We also encourage parents to understand the training environment and the progress their child is making. You can read more here: Why We Encourage Parents To Get Involved.

That is completely normal. Some children need time to settle before they feel comfortable joining in fully. Coaches will guide them at a sensible pace. If your child is shy, this article may help: My Child Is Shy.

Yes, students will need a BJJ Gi for regular Gi classes. If they are joining through the youth pathway, we can explain starter pack options and help you understand what they need before they begin. You can also view kit options through the Praetorian MMA Shop.

Yes. Many students train both BJJ Gi and BJJ NoGi. Gi training helps develop grips, control, patience and technical detail, while NoGi helps with movement, scrambles and grappling skills that transfer naturally into Kids & Teens MMA.

Yes. Students can start with BJJ Gi, add BJJ NoGi, move into MMA, compete if they want to and use 1-to-1 coaching when extra help is needed. The aim is to give each student a clear route to progress at the right pace.

Send us a message with your child’s age, any experience and what they are interested in. We can help you choose the best starting point, whether that is BJJ Gi, BJJ NoGi, MMA or a first trial session through the 7 Day Free Trial.
