MORNING BJJ

WHAT ARE
MORNING CLASSES?

Our Morning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are designed for adults looking to train in a calm, structured and focused environment before the rest of the day begins. Whether you are completely new to BJJ or returning after time away, morning training provides a quieter setting to learn, improve and build consistency.

Sessions combine technical instruction, drilling, positional training and live practice, helping members develop practical grappling skills, fitness, confidence and problem-solving ability. The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, making it an excellent option for beginners who may feel intimidated by larger evening classes.

Morning classes are particularly popular with shift workers, military personnel, emergency service workers, parents, remote workers and anyone whose schedule makes evening training difficult. Rather than trying to fit training around life, these sessions help make training part of your routine from the start of the day.

NEW TO BJJ?

YOU'RE IN THE
RIGHT PLACE.

Most people who start in our morning classes have never trained before, or they are returning after time away. You do not need to be fit, flexible or confident before you walk through the door.

The coaching is clear, the pace is sensible and the room is supportive. You will be shown what to do, partnered appropriately and given time to build confidence at your own pace. Morning sessions are often a great option for people who prefer a calmer environment to learn in.

These sessions are especially useful if evenings are difficult because of work, family life, military commitments, emergency service shifts or changing routines. Rather than finding excuses not to train, many members find morning classes become the most consistent part of their week.

THE PRAETORIAN PATHWAY

SERIOUS ABOUT BJJ?
TRAIN BOTH.

Morning BJJ is a strong way to build consistency, confidence and technical understanding, but if you are serious about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, training both Gi and NoGi will help you become more complete.

Gi training develops structure, grips, pressure, control and long-term progression through the belt system. NoGi training adds movement, scrambles, wrestling influence and modern submission grappling. Together, they give you a stronger overall game and more ways to improve across the week.

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I start BJJ with no experience?

Yes. Most beginners start with no background at all. Classes are structured so you can learn safely and build confidence step by step. You can also read our first class guide before you come in.

Do I need a Gi to start BJJ?

No. You can start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through either Gi or NoGi training. Gi BJJ uses the traditional jacket and belt, while NoGi is trained in fitted training clothes such as a rashguard or t-shirt with shorts or leggings. You can read our Gi vs NoGi BJJ guide if you are unsure where to begin.

What age can members train BJJ?

Adult BJJ sessions are mainly aimed at adults and suitable older members. Younger members may be able to attend selected sessions with coach permission, depending on maturity, behaviour, experience and the class being attended.

Is sparring mandatory?

No. Live rolling is introduced when appropriate. Beginners are supported and never expected to jump in before they are ready. Positional work, controlled rounds and coached training are used to help you build confidence safely.

Can I train both Gi and NoGi?

Yes. Many members train both. Gi BJJ helps develop grips, control, pressure and long-term belt progression, while NoGi BJJ helps develop movement, reactions, scrambles and submission grappling.

How often should I train?

Most beginners do well with two sessions per week. Members can also add morning classes, Gi BJJ, NoGi BJJ, MMA and open mats if their schedule allows, helping them become more rounded across Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and combat sports.

What if I’m not in shape?

You do not need to be fit before starting. Fitness improves naturally through consistent training. BJJ is technical, progressive and suitable for people who want to build confidence, fitness and skill over time.

What should I bring to my first class?

Wear comfortable training clothes, bring sliders or flip-flops for off the mats, and arrive ready to learn. Bottled water is included. For NoGi, a rashguard or fitted t-shirt with shorts or leggings is ideal. For Gi classes, a Gi is needed once you decide to continue.

Are morning BJJ classes beginner friendly?

Yes. Morning BJJ classes are a great option for beginners because they are often quieter, focused and easier to build into a routine. They are useful for shift workers, parents, military personnel and anyone who cannot always train in the evening.

Can BJJ help with MMA?

Yes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has strong crossover with MMA because it develops positional control, submissions, escapes, body awareness and confidence on the ground. If you are interested in MMA, you can also explore our MMA classes.

Can I compete in BJJ?

Yes. Competition is available for members who want it, but it is never forced. Coaches can help you understand when you are ready, how to prepare and how to use competition as part of your development.

Do you offer 1-to-1 coaching?

Yes. Praetorian MMA coaches offer 1-to-1 training. This can help with confidence, technique, competition preparation or getting extra support outside class.
