WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
BJJ GI FAREHAM
AND GOSPORT
BJJ Gi Fareham and Gosport training at Praetorian MMA is built around control, leverage, pressure and technical problem solving. Using the grips of the jacket, you will learn how to control positions, escape bad situations, attack submissions and develop the skills needed to progress through the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belt system.
The pace of Gi training makes it suitable for beginners because it gives you time to understand what is happening, make decisions and build proper technique instead of relying on strength. Whether your goal is fitness, self-development, competition or learning something new, our BJJ Gi classes provide a clear route for long-term progression.

Technical Development
Learn grips, posture, timing and movement in a structured way.

Sweeps & Escapes
Build the ability to recover, reverse and improve position.

Submissions
Understand how attacks are created through control and pressure.

Positional Mastery
Develop confidence in guard, mount, side control and back control.

For All Levels
Train alongside beginners, hobbyists and experienced grapplers.

Control & Leverage
Use technique and positioning instead of relying on size or strength.

Gi, NoGi and extra roundsADULT GI BJJ QUESTIONS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I start BJJ with no experience?
Yes. Most beginners start with no background at all. Classes are structured so you can learn safely and build confidence step by step. You can also read our first class guide before you come in.
Do I need a Gi to start?
No. You can start in comfortable training clothes. If you join through the Adult Gi Pathway, your Fortitude Gi and belt are included. You can also visit Fortitude BJJ if you want to buy additional kit later.
What age can adults train?
Adult Gi BJJ is aimed at ages 17+. Younger members may be able to attend selected adult sessions with coach permission, depending on maturity, behaviour and the class being attended.
Is sparring mandatory?
No. Live rolling is introduced when appropriate. Beginners are supported and never expected to jump in before they are ready. Positional work and controlled rounds are used to help you build confidence safely.
Can I train Gi and NoGi?
Yes. Many members train both. Gi helps develop control and detail, while NoGi BJJ develops movement, reactions and faster-paced grappling. You can also read our guide on Gi vs NoGi BJJ.
How often should I train?
Most beginners do well with two sessions per week. The Adult Gi Pathway includes unlimited class access, so you can also add NoGi, morning classes, MMA and open mats if your schedule allows.
What if I’m not in shape?
You do not need to be fit before starting. Fitness improves naturally through consistent training. BJJ is technical, progressive and suitable for people who want to build confidence, fitness and skill over time.
What should I bring to my first class?
Wear comfortable training clothes, bring sliders or flip-flops for off the mats, and arrive ready to learn. Bottled water is included. If you are training Gi BJJ regularly, you can use the Adult Gi Pathway or buy kit through Fortitude BJJ.
How long does it take to get good?
Progress depends on consistency. You will learn useful skills early, but BJJ is a long-term combat sport built through regular training, coaching and time on the mats. You can read more about our approach in why we do not believe in easy belts.
Is BJJ safe?
Classes are coached, structured and controlled. Like any physical activity there is risk, but safety, communication and good training habits are built into the room from the start.
Can I compete in Gi BJJ?
Yes. Competition is available for members who want it, but it is never forced. Coaches can help you understand when you are ready, how to prepare and how to use competition as part of your development.
Do you offer 1-to-1 coaching?
Yes. Rob Goodson, Nathan Johnstone, Martyn Styler and other Praetorian MMA coaches offer 1-to-1 training. This can help with confidence, technique, competition preparation or getting extra support outside class.
