SMOOTHCOMP GUIDE | HOW TO REGISTER FOR BJJ COMPETITIONS
If you are planning to compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there is a very good chance you will come across Smoothcomp.
Whether you are entering your first local competition or competing regularly throughout the year, Smoothcomp is one of the most commonly used competition management systems in the grappling world.
Many of the competitions attended by Praetorian MMA athletes use Smoothcomp for registration, division management, weigh-ins, brackets, schedules and results.
If you have never used it before, do not worry. This guide explains what Smoothcomp is, how to create an account, how to link yourself to Praetorian MMA and why that matters for future competition support.
WHAT IS SMOOTHCOMP?
Smoothcomp is an online platform used by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, submission grappling and combat sports events around the world.
Competition organisers use it to manage entries, brackets, weigh-ins, schedules and results. Athletes use it to register for events, manage their profile, view brackets, follow results and track their competition history.
For anyone interested in competing, creating a Smoothcomp account is one of the first practical steps.

WHY SHOULD I CREATE AN ACCOUNT?
Even if you are not planning to compete immediately, having a Smoothcomp account already set up makes life easier when opportunities arise.
Once your account is created, you can register more quickly for competitions, view upcoming events, track your competition history, follow results and stay connected to your team.
Most importantly, it allows Praetorian MMA to support you properly throughout your competition journey.
CREATE YOUR SMOOTHCOMP ACCOUNT
To begin, visit the Smoothcomp registration page and create your account.
You can create an athlete account for yourself or, if you are registering a child, create and manage their profile through your account.
Make sure the information is accurate, especially:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Belt rank
- Weight
- Contact details
- Club / academy
Accurate information helps avoid problems later when entering divisions, checking brackets or registering for events.
LINK YOUR ACCOUNT TO PRAETORIAN MMA
This is one of the most important steps.
When creating your profile, make sure you link yourself to Praetorian MMA on Smoothcomp.
Many new competitors accidentally miss this step. If your profile is not linked to the club, it becomes harder for coaches to track registrations, follow entries and support you properly at competitions.
Linking yourself to Praetorian MMA allows us to see which students are competing, help check divisions, monitor event entries and support athletes before, during and after competitions.
All of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athletes are registered through Praetorian MMA on Smoothcomp, including our coaching team.
By linking your profile correctly, you become part of the wider Praetorian MMA competition team.
If you are unsure whether you have linked your account correctly, speak to one of the coaches and we can check it with you.
BEFORE ENTERING A COMPETITION
Before registering for any competition, speak to a coach.
This is especially important if it will be your first event, if you are registering a child or if you are unsure which division to enter.
We can help you check:
- The right competition for your level
- The correct age division
- The correct belt division
- The correct weight category
- Whether to enter Gi, NoGi or both
- Beginner, intermediate or advanced categories where applicable
Entering the correct division matters. It keeps the experience fair, safe and useful for development.
CHOOSING GI OR NOGI
Some competitions offer Gi BJJ, NoGi BJJ or both.
If you are unsure which division to enter, speak to your coach before registering. Some students are better suited to one format at first, while others may benefit from entering both.
Parents registering children should also check with the coaching team first, especially for younger students or first-time competitors.
WHY WE ENCOURAGE COMPETITION
Not every student wants to compete, and competition is not compulsory at Praetorian MMA.
However, we strongly believe competition can accelerate growth, confidence and development when introduced at the right time.
Competition teaches lessons that are difficult to replicate in normal training. It develops composure, resilience, problem solving, focus and the ability to perform under pressure.
Many of our most successful students have benefited enormously from competition experience. One example is Josh Woodbourne, whose journey from a shy teenager to a successful competitor and coach has been built through consistent training and regular competition experience.
This is also why we encourage students and parents to read more about why we encourage competition at Praetorian MMA and why consistency beats talent.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU REGISTER?
Once registered, continue training as normal.
As the event approaches, check your Smoothcomp account regularly. Brackets, weigh-in times and schedules can change, especially close to competition day.
Before the event, make sure you:
- Check your bracket
- Monitor schedule updates
- Confirm weigh-in requirements
- Speak to your coach
- Make sure you have the correct equipment
- Arrive with enough time to prepare
Competition day should never be a surprise. Preparation starts long before stepping onto the mats.
YOU ARE NOT COMPETING ALONE
One of the biggest misconceptions new competitors have is believing they are entering competition alone.
That is not how we do things at Praetorian MMA.
When our athletes compete, they do so as part of a team. Coaches help prepare competitors before events, teammates support one another and parents often travel together.
Through our relationship with Odyssey Combat Club, there is often an even wider support network available at competitions around the country.
Success is rarely achieved alone. Whether it is your first competition or your fiftieth, you are part of something bigger than yourself.
COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
Most Smoothcomp issues are simple to avoid if you check everything properly before registering.
- Do not forget to link your profile to Praetorian MMA.
- Do not enter a competition without speaking to a coach first.
- Do not guess your child's division if you are unsure.
- Do not enter the wrong belt, age or weight category.
- Do not leave registration until the last minute.
- Do not ignore schedule or bracket updates close to the event.
If in doubt, ask. It is always easier to check before registering than to fix mistakes later.
